Fine Jewelry GOLD PLATED
Gold plating is produced industrially only since the beginning of the 20th century. The amount of gold used in the plating is stated exactly like with gold alloys in 1000 shares. Thus the specification 10/000 Milliém Doublé points out the fact that for the production of 1 kg of material at least 10 g of fine gold (in alloyed form) was processed.

All gold plating always consist of alloys, never of pure gold, because it has only limited conductivity and can be therefore not electrolytically applied. The thickness of the plating is stated in Milliém (manner of writing, e.g.: 10/000). This means, a gold plated chain which weighs, for example, 100 g and possesses a plating of 40/000 Milliém, consists of 4 g of fine gold. There are different kinds of gold plating which are denominated according to the amount of gold contained in the plating. Every manufacturer must guarantee the observance as well as the control of a sufficient amount of gold in the respective category.
Because gold plated material, no matter how it was plated, always consists of a common metal core (as a rule a Tombak or brass alloy), it reacts of course more sensitively to corroding substances than, e.g., 14Kt gold jewelry. Not only aggressive body excretions like sweat, but also cosmetics and medicine have, together with atmospheric influences (e.g. saltwater-containing air in coastal regions), a crucial influence on the life span of gold plated jewelry.

Tips to the 'special case' Switzerland: The classical hallmark "American Doublé" with 10 Milliém of guaranteed gold plating is not recognised in Switzerland as such. There only the signet "Plaqué", which must evince a plating thickness of at least 5 micrometers (also called Micron), is accepted by law. These facts must be accepted. Nevertheless, we assure you that Switzerland is an isolated case and the high-class hallmark "American Doublé" is accepted everywhere else in Europe.
