Doublé Jewelry, Gold-Plated (American Doublé)
Gold-plated jewelry is produced industrially since around the late 19th century or beginning of the 20th century. Colloquial, the term Doubleè jewelry is nowadays used for all kinds of gilding. Unfortunately, the quality of gold-plated jewelry products, that are offered in retail outlets or markets, is not always very high. Many products are only provided with a very thin gold coating, that (not infrequently) looks pretty only for a few days. Our recommendation is therefore: If you want to buy high-quality, gold-plated jewelry, find yourself a dealer you know and trust. One who won't let you down - even in a warranty case!
Here is a small selection of products from our gold-plated jewelry range:
The fineness of Doublè (gold-plating) is specified in 1000th parts, just as
in all gold alloys. Thus, the declaration "10/000 milliem Doublé" indicates,
that for 1kg merchandise at least 10g fine gold (in alloyed form) was processed
or applied.
As base material for gold-plated jewelry serves mostly brass or a tombac alloy.
Name | Milliém-Range |
---|---|
American Doublé (AMD or Amerik.) | 10/000 to 20/000 |
Charnier Doublé | 20/000 to 25/000 |
Union Doublé | 40/000 to 50/000 |
All gold plating always consist of alloys, never of pure gold, as it possesses only a limited conductivity and thus can not simply be applied electrolytically. The thickness of the plating is given in Milliém (notation eg: 10/000). In practice this means, that for a Doublé (gold-plated) chain, which weighs 100g and for example a gold plating of 40/000 Milliém has, 4g fine gold has been used. There are several types of Doublé (gold plating), which, depending on the amount of gold plating are designated differently. Each manufacturer of Doublé (gold plating) must guarantee compliance with and control of a sufficient gold plating in the respective Doublé (gold plating) category.
Because Doublé (gold plating) - no matter what kind - always consists of a base core material (a tombac or brass alloy as already mentioned above), it reacts naturally more sensitive to corrosive substances as for example 585 gold jewelry. The body's own secretions (like aggressive perspiration), cosmetics or medications along with atmospheric influences (eg salt water-laden air in coastal areas), have a crucial influence on the life span of Doublé (gold-plated) jewelry.
Information about the 'special case' Switzerland: The classic American Doublé with 10 Milliém guaranteed gold plating is not recognized in Switzerland as such. There, the only accepted designation by law is "Plaqué", which for gold-plating must have a layer thickness of at least 5 micrometers (also called Micron). These facts have to be accepted. We assure you, however, that Switzerland is an isolated case in Europe and everywhere else the quality label "American Doublé" is accepted.
